Black & White World
The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)
I might have reached my Repeat Viewing Threshold on this movie already. Some movies come with a very high RVT, like Singin’ in the Rain and Bringing Up Baby—I’ve reached the RVT on both of those too, but it took well over 30 viewings before I got there. 40-Year-Old Virgin only took three. I didn’t dislike it, I wasn’t bored by it, but I also didn’t laugh once.
I also suspect this movie have some of the same creative editing problems that I found in Ghostbusters—where it suddenly seems to pick up the continuation of a scene that ended 20 minutes ago. In Ghostbusters those timeline issues really bug, but in this movie it’s less of a factor, because pretty much any scene can go just about anywhere. Which also might not be the sign of a great film.
I’m leaving it at four & a half stars, though—the performances are all great, the dialogue really is very funny (or at least it was the first few times), and everyone seems to really be enjoying doing the movie together. If I could recut it, though, I’d end it after the car accident and cut all the wedding stuff, and “Age of Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In.” Just doesn’t need to be there—it’s funny, but it’s like a different movie entirely.
