Stormy’s Diary - continued
Oh, Dear Reader, can you feel it in the air? Do you feel the chill, do you smell the pine needles, do you hear the carolers sing? Perhaps you don’t, but Stormy does! Let’s tackle this week’s edition of Stormy’s Diary, shall we?
May 18, 1949:
Today was christmas, everybody was excited and so was I. For christmas I got a sqeaky mouse but I chewed his head off. Also I got a sqeaky doll, a rubber bone, a package of Dog Yummies, a cocker bowl, and a license. It was a good Christmas.
- StormyMay 20, 1949:
I played with my toys. I have been taught to sit up.
- StormyMay 21, 1949:
Today I stole a bone from Taffy. it was good.
- StormyMay 22, 1949:
Today I learned to shake hands. Richard says Lassie and I shake hands with him.
- Stormy
A few notes: clearly, this does not take place in May; I’ve said before the pre-printed dates in the book are wrong. The reason you don’t see an entry for “May 19” is that the Christmas entry took up two pages, so great was Stormy’s joy. Also: bad Stormy, stealing Taffy’s bone! Shame on you! And so close to Christmas, you already had your own bone. Still, what a smart dog—less than a year old and he’s already sitting up and shaking hands. Good boy. In other news: Dad still can’t spell “squeaky.”

My first thought, yes. All these months and still no u in sqeaky.
I stole a bone - it was good. That sounds almost biblical.
A license for your Christmas. That sounds almost like a Christmas special.
Happy Holidays!

Damn, that dog got a lot more for Christmas that year than I ever did. He’s a lucky boy. He got a license to… drive? So why did your dad teach him “Lassie” as a command to shake hands?
