CD Mix #6, the Do-Over: Track Listing!
I am officially tired of the rain. This week in L.A. we have had rain on Monday, rain on Tuesday, rain on Wednesday, rain (and in some places hail) on Thursday, and rain on Friday. Now, right up until Thursday, I was fine with this. I live close to work, so I’m not stuck in much of the traffic that has plagued the southland all week. I mean, I did move to southern California to get away from the rain, but after some 10 or 11 years away from the Pacific Northwest, I’ve finally begun to make my peace with the rain again.
Still, five days in a row? That’s overkill. Rain rain go away.
Anyway, that is not the point of today’s missive, Dear Reader; today is the day I have decided to post my CD track listing. Now, I know CD’s went out Tuesday instead of Monday this time around, and as recently as last night, I don’t think anyone had received my CD in the mail yet (I’ve received two, by the way: Mike’s and Kelly’s). I’m posting them anyway, “after the jump” as all the hip young bloggers say these days. Click on the “MORE” link below to reveal the songs. If you haven’t received the CD yet and prefer not to be spoiled, don’t click. That’s easy, isn’t it?
CD Mix Challenge #6: The Do-Over!
1. Sellout: “All That I Want,” by the Weepies, used in a JC Penney (I think? Some department store) commercial around the holidays.
2. Foreign language: “A Mi Manera,” The Gipsy Kings, their Spanish cover of “My Way,” which I think I like even better than Frankie’s.
3. Cheating song: “Always the Last to Know,” Del Amitri.
4. Song that makes you cry: “Je T’Attendrai,” from the film Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. If you’ve seen the film, I don’t need to explain any further. If you haven’t, see it, and then we’ll talk.
5. B-Side: “Trust,” by Squeeze. Oddly, this is the B-side to the only other Squeeze song I’ve used in a CD mix before—“Is That Love.”
6. Kick-ass cover: “Bring The Noise,” Unholy Trio. A cover of Public Enemy’s seminal hip-hop anthem; I believe Mike recommended this cover to me back in the Napster days.
7. Earworm: “The General Specific,” by Band of Horses. It’s actually a little annoying that this song gets in my head, since I don’t actually know the lyrics so I can’t sing along to it.
8. Live track: “Cigarette State,” by Robbie Fulks—smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, motherfuckers! After the mixes went out in the mail, I realized that Bet has used this song before in a previous mix, although hers was the original studio version.
9. Title out of nowhere: “Creeque Alley,” by The Mamas and the Papas.
10. New favorite (since the last mix): “Woman! Man!” by Gomez. I was introduced to Gomez through their cover of The Beatles’ “Getting Better,” which was used in a Philips ad about five years back. This one is on their 2006 album How We Operate (which I purchased around Christmas time) and I think it’s awesome.
11. Favorite artist duo: “Faded Love,” by Shawn Colvin and Lyle Lovett, which is also a cover song. This is from some tribute album or other; I’ve had it since the Napster days. I miss the Napster days.
12. Geographical location song: “Lake Charles,” Lucinda Williams. Now, I like this choice particularly because it’s not just a passing mention of a place name.
13. Musical question...: “Honey Are You Straight of Are You Blind?” by Elvis Costello.
14. ... and answer!: “I Can See for Miles,” by The Who. I was trying to avoid yes or no questions. In hindsight, this is maybe my least favorite contribution to the CD Mix this time out.
15. Four letter word: “Rain,” by Steve Forbert. I have Mike to thank for this one—this is from the Little Stevie Orbit album, which I have been unable to find for years, but Mike got me the hookup.
16. Seven Deadly Sins: “Every Day Should Be a Holiday,” by The Dandy Warhols. Sloth, my favorite sin!
17. Song you wouldn’t play in front of Mom: “Fuck and Run,” by Liz Phair. I might play the first couple of verses in front of her.
18. Song about violence/death: “Murder Was the Case,” by Snoop Dogg. Sorry, Bet. Probably wouldn’t play this one in front of Mom either, come to think of it.
19. Guilty Pleasure: “For All We Know,” by the Carpenters. SHUT UP! THE CARPENTERS RULE!
20. Amnesty song x 2: “Today’s Teardrops,” by Fountains of Wayne—a b-side and a kick-ass cover (original by Ricky Nelson).

I got Mike’s CD yesterday, and yours today. I also got a CD in a DVD holder, and none of the songs on the cover are on the CD. An April Fool’s joke? Maybe. Anyway, Spanky is happy, I have no idea what the songs are, and to be quite honest, I dont know who it is from…

Gah… I officially suck. I don’t read your blog every day, Sten. I apologize. I do hit it a couple of times a week, though--but not this month. I was sick, then busy and blah-blah-blah. I’m lame. I missed it again. Maybe the 7th time will be the charm?
You even mentioned it in an email to me and I immediately forgot about it in my reply…

So far I have discs from Marla, Kelly, Steve, Stennie, and Michelle. I should get more tomorrow, except for Bet’s, who likely didn’t send me one (for which I have to thank her).
I’ve got track listings and notes here:

OK, my tracks are up....a tidbit of information more than was sent. I hope you liked my tunes..I am enjoying Bet’s, Stennie’s, Kelly’s, River Selke’s and Mike’s. I received Steve’s, I think. I don’t really understand it...I am too something for that kind of music, sorry. I gave the CD to Spanky. he’ll love it.

Hi gang,
I got a ton of cds in. Haven’t had a chance to pop them in yet, but I can’t wait! Hope you’re all enjoying mine. Hopefully tomorrow, I will post on my blog my track listing and why, even though I included it with my mix for those who are eager. I’ll post a link when I get it up.
Thanks everyone!
Kelly :)

The DVD holder is indeed mine. The faux-track list was mainly because I was feeling puckish, although it does also have the advantage of not letting the title spoil the “not in front of Mom” song.

But Steve - do we get a track listing? I really like your CD by the way - it is just what I was looking for: something different!
