Black & White World
Way Out West (1937)
Laurel and Hardy go west to deliver news of an inheritance to a young lady, and get caught up in the ensuing hilarity when the girl’s guardian plots to steal the inheritance. Low on plot but big on laughs. Highlights: Stan & Ollie’s softshoe routine to the Avalon Boys’ “At the Ball, That’s All” and their rendition of “Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” their protracted (and noisy) attempt to break into a house while everyone is sleeping, and Stan eating Ollie’s hat. As a warm up I also watched the short film The Music Box, which was also great fun. I wish I’d taped more of the Laurel & Hardy marathon.
