Hable con ella (2002)
As much as I liked the first feature Bad Education, I think I enjoyed this one just a little bit more. Time and subsequent re-viewings will tell, but if I had to choose between them right now, I’d go with Hable con Ella. In both films, Almodovar is able to take a character that would traditionally be seen as repellent and turn them into fully-dimensional human beings (in this case, even sympathetic). He doesn’t shy away from the repugnance of Benigno’s act, but he doesn’t really make any judgments on it either. I was touched by Marco’s affection and protection of Benigno—that was the real love story in the film.
